A man who was clearly stressed and wielding a large knife walked into the Huay Kwang police station in Thailand on Saturday night. It’s hard to imagine under any circumstances in which this sort of situation could possibly end well, but one calm and level-headed officer made that happen.
The would-be assailant was engaged by Officer Anirut Malee, who was so relaxed and non-confrontational that it was almost as if nothing dangerous was going on. The police offer kept incredibly calm and reasoned with the 45-year-old knife wielder, who revealed that he was under stress caused by a new job and having some of his personal possessions stolen. He was “stressed out.”
Eventually, Malee was able to convince him to hand over the knife that he’d stormed into the station with that night. And rather than immediately restrain and detain the man, Malee walked toward him with his arms outstretched.
In a touching and completely unexpected display of humanity and compassion, the two men shared a moment of understanding and warmth. Malee even extended an invitation for the stranger to join him for a meal. In the end, the police officer was praised by his colleagues for being so sensible, and the man thanked him.
Sometimes we need someone to hear us out. The burdens of life can weigh so heavily and in some cases we lose sight of how to behave-not unlike the man who seemed so intent on doing harm that Saturday night. A simple conversation with another person who acknowledged him as a human being disarmed him that night, not force.
Charges were not filed against the armed man, but he was sent to the hospital for a psychological evaluation to determine his mental wellness.
