Diversity needs to be embraced in all aspects of life. Traditionally the way of life of a people is passed to the next generation by observing certain rights. This then translates to a certain culture which may differ. Modern ways of living require that some adjustments be made to ensure that they enjoy life. In Germany marriage was affected and so it had to pass through the parliament for some amendments. It has been the subject of discussion for decades and finally a decision was made on June 30, 2017. For the gay men and women equality had been achieved.
The church is the major group that opposed the same despite the low numbers it has received lately. It is conservative on some issues especially marriage since it is directly involved. However it faces competitors such as politicians who to some point seem to be thirsty for votes as election near. Merkel, the daughter of a protestant pastor initially was against same sex marriage. But since she wants to be re-elected her opinion is that the people should vote on the issue based on their personal conviction. It was evident that the gay people were supported in order for them to return the favor back in September.
Jens Spahn who is openly gay attacks the church saying that it fights for equality of all aspect but categories marriage a special. A member of the lesbian and gay federation of German argues that when the constitution was written it only cater for opposite sex couples. He further explains that protest mounted in the early 90’s and a statue criminalizing homosexuality among men was abolished. The matter moved forward quickly this week when it was debated on parliament and won the votes of the legislators. Marriage as an institution has been redefined in Berlin.
