Afshan Ashiq, last year was in the headlines for her pictures of pelting stones hit the media. However, you would be surprised to know that the same girl is the captain of Jammu & Kashmir women football team and an inspiration for the thousands of young girls and boys of the state. What’s more inspiring is that she trained and built a team of girls because of her enthusiasm and love for the game of football.
In a state like Kashmir where neither are the situations nor the infrastructure to support the young sportspersons, Afshan has carved her way out of many difficulties. Apart from being the skipper, she also has the added responsibility of goalkeeper in the team.

Recently she along with her teammates had a meeting with Mr. Rajnath Singh, the central home minister in Indian government. Minister has assured her of full support from government to promote the sports culture in the state and help youngsters to pursue their dreams.
Met the young and energetic girls of J&K’s first ever women football team. They are highly motivated & driven when it comes to football. Playing the role of new age ‘Gender Benders’ these girls are setting an example for others to follow. I wish them success and a great future. pic.twitter.com/3ZlMwhzkXm

Afshan has also promised that her team as well as other young talent of different sports will bring honors to the state and the country in future if provided the proper training and facilities. The home minister also looked impressed with the girls as he tweeted about the meeting and wished them success.

Afshan had earlier met with the state chief minister Mehbooba Mufti regarding her sports plans for the state. She is also the member of a Mumbai football club. Her life story and achievements are truly an inspiration for many.

Soon, we may see her story depicted on the silver screen if some media reports are to be believed. Girls like her are an example for the people of her age in the valley and anywhere in the world.
